Aerojet fortunes drift in GenCorp's shadowBy Dale Kasler Sacramento Bee November 13, 2004 It was a city that never slept. Aerojet in the 1950s and '60s had everything to serve its 22,000 employees in Rancho Cordova -- a recreation club, a swimming pool, a summer camp for kids, and a company store that sold everything from golf clubs to appliances. President Lyndon Johnson dropped by to deliver a pep talk; so did astronauts like Frank Borman and Neil Armstrong. The rocket-engine manufacturer was open 24 hours a day. But when the space program was curtailed and the missile contracts wound down, the heyday of rocketry was over. Most of Aerojet's employees were let go. The 24-hour city became a ghost town. Employment today: 1,600. Aerojet and its parent, GenCorp Inc., have spent the past 30-plus years trying to reinvent themselves, attempting to build businesses out of everything from industrial scales to auto parts to chemicals.
