Simi officials keep eye on lab's cleanup Low-key tactics proving to be effective, council members say By Teresa Rochester Ventura County Star November 14, 2004 When the city of Los Angeles joined a lawsuit last month to impose stricter cleanup requirements for radioactive contamination at the Santa Susana Field Laboratory because its residents lived nearby, some Simi Valley officials learned about it from the media. Despite Simi Valley's proximity to the site near the Los Angeles-Ventura County line and groundwater contamination linked to chemicals from the lab, city officials said, they have not considered a similar lawsuit. City staff members religiously attend meetings on the situation and work with state and federal representatives to apply pressure to agencies involved with the cleanup. Both methods will help make sure the area is cleaned of toxicants, Simi Valley city officials have said. Critics suggest the city's less aggressive approach is not active enough.
