Naval Base Point Loma Hosts REC Training
SAN DIEGO - The annual DoD Regional Environmental Coordinator (REC) Training Symposium was held Nov. 2-4 at the Admiral Kidd club on Naval Base Point Loma (NBPL) Fleet Anti-warfare Training Center. The event is a chance for RECs from each state to get together and discuss important environmental issue that effect military installations and state resources. "It has been eight short years since the DoD REC program was created," said Capt. Anthony Gonzales, NBPL commanding officer. "I think we can all be proud of the tremendous growth and positive results already achieved in this short time." This year's main subject at the symposium was the continuing encroachment of habitat and the growth of cities around military bases. "Expanded development and urban growth is an increasing challenge to the viability of ranges and installations, and is an impediment to some of the readiness missions that you folks (military) are very much involved in on a daily basis," said Mike Chrisman, California's secretary for resources. One important event that took place during the symposium was the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) by Chrisman and Alex Beehler, assistant deputy under secretary of defense (environment, safety and occupational health). … For the entire article, see http://www.navycompass.com/news/newsview.asp?c=131635 -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 http://www.cpeo.org
