Funding to study water on tap? Army Corps to look at perchlorate risks By Kerry Cavanaugh Los Angeles Daily News November 27, 2004 Championed by Thousand Oaks Rep. Elton Gallegly, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is expected to get $100,000 to look at studying where perchlorate is migrating in Simi Valley's groundwater. The money is earmarked in the $388 billion spending bill approved by Congress this past week. That's in addition to $19 million allotted to continue cleaning up the Department of Energy's former nuclear research at the Santa Susana Field Lab in the Simi Hills. The rocket fuel ingredient perchlorate has been found in groundwater testing wells throughout Simi Valley at levels above California health guidelines. The wells are not used for drinking water. However, water regulators have been unable to say where the perchlorate is coming from. Gallegly's office enlisted the Army Corps of Engineers to do a reconnaissance study of the perchlorate problem because the federal agency has analyzed perchlorate movement in groundwater at the Whittaker-Bermite explosives factory in Santa Clarita. ..
