Judge blocks Hanford initiative
YAKIMA -- A federal judge ordered a temporary stop to the enforcement of Initiative 297 on Thursday, averting a threatened halt of cleanup at Hanford and research at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. However, Federal Judge Alan McDonald ruled that the temporary restraining order would not extend to a key portion of the initiative. The Department of Energy is not allowed to start bringing radioactive waste to the Hanford site, an issue already addressed in a pending suit brought by the state in 2003. Voters in every county of the state but Benton and Franklin counties voted Nov. 2 to stop DOE from bringing more waste to Hanford until the waste already there is cleaned up.
