[At least one of the parcels in this military housing project is likely
to contain unexploded ordnance. Part of Camp Beale during World War II,
this parcel is adjacent to "Volume I" of the Camp Beale formerly used
Defense site. Volume I contains those portions of the FUDS most likely
to contain UXO. Are military families, who have little choice about
where they are to live, to be exposed to risks that are deemed
unacceptable for the neighboring civilian population? - LS]
The Air Force has scrapped a deal with a private developer for Beale Air Force Base's 1,344 military housing units and wants other bidders to resubmit their offers. The $204 million agreement with American Eagle Communities, based in Dallas, Texas, is up for resubmission because of concerns the military had with the final closing documents. "It's not going to affect the military personnel at all because that process never started," Capt. Michael Andrews, chief of the 9th Reconnaissance Wing Public Affairs, said Tuesday.
