Cleanup at Arden Hills munitions plant goes to the public tonight

Federal officials will hold a public meeting this evening to discuss radioactive waste cleanup at the Twin Cities Army Ammunition Plant in Arden Hills.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokeswoman Viktoria Mitlyng said a former munitions manufacturing site there has been restored so that it can be used for other purposes. It is part of a 775-acre property owned by the federal government. Parts of the property eventually could be redeveloped.

The cleanup involved depleted uranium, which Honeywell workers machined from bars into munitions from the mid-1970s to the late 1980s. The density of the depleted uranium allows the projectiles to penetrate hard surfaces, such as tank armor. Because the uranium retained some radioactivity, Honeywell had a license from the NRC to handle the material and dispose of wastes.
