Shepley landfill treatment plan moving ahead rapidly ...By Don Eriksson Harvard Hillside (MA) December 15, 2004 DEVENS -- An extraction, treatment and discharge system to eliminate arsenic from groundwater beneath the Shepley's Hill landfill cap is nearing completion, Chuck Ouelette, one of two project engineers for Army contractor CH2M Hill, reported to the Restoration Advisory Board last week in Ayer town hall. The foundation and shell of the treatment plant is complete and most major equipment has been installed, he said. Mechanical and electric work and installation of primary power is expected to be finished by the third week of December. The treatment plant will extract arsenic and discharge groundwater treated to drinking water standards using a micro-filtration system. Extraction wells, one of which is close to Scully Road in Ayer, are in place to test soil for arsenic, iron and manganese content. The landfill is in the town of Ayer in the Northeast portion of the former Fort Devens. Work is also underway installing electrical and fire alarm conduits and water discharge pipes across the top of the environmental soil cap that covers the landfill. A cloth-like layer of leak protection is lain under the pipes. Ouelette showed pictures of the piping being covered with a brim of soil that will be naturally vegetated. The overall effectiveness of the Army's solution for discharging treated water had been argued at the October advisory board meeting held on Devens. … For the entire article, see http://www.harvardhillside.com/Stories/0,1413,108~5342~2599297,00.html -- Lenny Siegel Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight c/o PSC, 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 http://www.cpeo.org
