Harris looks to expand testing

On the eve of the county's beryllium screening program, U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris announced four possible initiatives to expand blood tests to former Loral American Beryllium Co. workers living outside of Manatee County.

The Harris initiatives came at the same time Manatee County Commission voted to spend $60,000 to offer beryllium blood tests to 250 people through the Manatee County Health Department.

Harris plans to ask Sarasota County Commissioners to fund a beryllium testing program for workers similar to the one approved Tuesday by the Manatee County Commission.

She also plans to ask the Department of Energy to include former American Beryllium workers in their beryllium screening programs.

Harris, R-Sarasota, plans to ask Lockheed Martin, the aerospace giant, to be on her list of possible donors to cover testing costs.

Lockheed Martin Corp., which at one time owned the plant where groundwater contamination was discovered, has assumed responsibility for cleanup of the waste.
