Feinstein to push water bill PERCHLORATE: Her legislation would require safety standards and designate cleanup funds. By MICHELLE DeARMOND Riverside Press-Enterprise (CA) December 18, 2004 LOS ANGELES - Sen. Dianne Feinstein announced legislation Friday that she said would force the Environmental Protection Agency to set a safety standard for a health-threatening chemical that has leached into water supplies across the country. Feinstein, D-Calif., was at a lunch with more than 200 water-agency representatives and community leaders in Los Angeles when she outlined the bill she plans to introduce in January. The announcement received praise from Inland water officials, but drew criticism from a federal authority who said the timetable was unrealistic. The bill, if enacted, would require authorities to identify the scope of the problem that has plagued communities such as Glen Avon and Rialto. Additionally, it would force the EPA to set a national standard by July 31, 2007, on how much of the chemical perchlorate - which was found in food in spring 2003 - is safe to have in the water. … For the entire article, see http://www.pe.com/localnews/inland/stories/PE_News_Local_feinstein18.1109a.html
