Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Waco perchlorate editorial |
[Note: The Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant in McGregor Texas is
one of the few locations where the Defense Department is conducting
full-scale perchlorate remediation. - LS]
A panel of the National Academy of Sciences has urged the Environmental Protection Agency to protect the public with less vigor when it comes to polluting the nation's waterways with perchlorate, a chemical used in rocket fuel and military munitions. Waco officials, working with U.S. Rep. Chet Edwards and others, have fought for years to get perchlorate wastes from McGregor's old Navy rocket-fuel plant cleaned up to prevent this chemical from affecting the mental development of children, among other harmful medical effects. The EPA should be congratulated for its a virtual no-tolerance standard for perchlorate pollution. It should not roll back the perchlorate standards.
