A specially equipped helicopter will be flying low and slow over Fort
Ord today at the start of a three-week, high-tech project to map large
areas cluttered with metal debris.

It's the first aerial geophysical survey in the Army's efforts to find
and remove unexploded ordnance at the former training base.

In hopes of speeding the long, slow conversion of the base to civilian

white poles sticking out from its underside will be visible sweeping
over the landscape in coming days. It will fly along at about 50 to 60
mph and about three to 20 feet above the ground.
