COPTER COMBS FORT ORD LANDSCAPE Specially equipped chopper aids in ordnance cleanup By TONYA CLAYTON Monterey Herald (CA) January 29, 2005 A specially equipped helicopter will be flying low and slow over Fort Ord today at the start of a three-week, high-tech project to map large areas cluttered with metal debris. It's the first aerial geophysical survey in the Army's efforts to find and remove unexploded ordnance at the former training base. In hopes of speeding the long, slow conversion of the base to civilian use, the Army wants to pinpoint potentially dangerous materials obscured by sand, soil or vegetation. Project manager David Eisen of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said he hopes to cover about 6,500 acres. The helicopter is excluded from some areas, he said, by terrain that is too steep and rugged. The specially equipped Bell 206 L-3 Long Ranger helicopter with long, white poles sticking out from its underside will be visible sweeping over the landscape in coming days. It will fly along at about 50 to 60 mph and about three to 20 feet above the ground. ...
