Some Oceana businesses fear Navy-forced closures By JON W. GLASS The Virginian-Pilot February 10, 2005 VIRGINIA BEACH ? Business owners around Oceana Naval Air Station are worried that the Navy wants to shut them down. The Navy has told more than three dozen businesses that they may be violating land easements that the federal government bought in the 1970s and ?80s to protect the jet base from encroachment. The businesses, including some long-established ones, are in high-noise zones and potential-crash zones on the air station?s western and southern boundaries, from Commerce Parkway and down London Bridge Road. Owners are alarmed at the prospect of a Navy crackdown. Many said they were unaware of the easements, which prohibit homes and certain types of commercial activities, including retail shops. ...
