Mopping up the costs Tewksbury wants to recoup $88G spent on chemical cleanup By VANESSA HUGHES Lowell Sun (MA) February 15, 2005 TEWKSBURY -- The town spent more than $88,000 dealing with four months of perchlorate contamination in the drinking water, and now officials are looking for reimbursement. Town Manager David Cressman said costs to date come to $88,395, a figure he does not expect to change significantly. Costs include work investigating the perchlorate source, which was traced to C.R. Bard, a medical-device maker in Billerica. The Department of Public Works incurred the biggest part of the expenses, spending $44,493 for regular testing conducted at the water treatment plant. The School Department was hit with a $32,214 bill for bottled water for drinking and cooking. The school's water fountains were closed while the town's water contained levels of perchlorate above the Department of Environmental Protection's recommended limit. Cressman said he is looking to Bard and also to the state for reimbursement. ...
