Agency challenges Navy on pollution DISPUTE CENTERS ON MOFFETT'S HANGAR ONE By Jessica Portner San Jose Mercury News (CA) February 24, 2005 The federal Environmental Protection Agency and state Regional Water Quality Board are dragging the U.S. Navy to the table to resolve an environmental dispute over toxic cleanup at Moffett Field, EPA officials confirmed Wednesday. The EPA contests the Navy's claim that the military is not responsible for removing contaminants from inside the massive 1933 Hangar One, which environmentalists hope could someday be refashioned into a theme park or aerospace museum. "I am pleased that the regulators are challenging the Navy," said Lenny Siegel, director of Mountain View's Center for Public Environmental Oversight, a watchdog group. "This is a building you can't tear down, but you don't want it to sit there and leach contamination into the environment." ...
