Filter system to be tried on perchlorate By AMANDA LEHMERT Cape Cod Times (MA) February 25, 2005 Relief may soon be on the way for a Sandwich couple with perchlorate flowing through their tap. The state Department of Environmental Protection and the Army are investigating filter systems that could remove the trace amounts of the substance from the family's well. Peter and Pearl Moretti asked the Army to either pay for a hookup to town water or provide them free bottled water after the Groundwater Study Program found perchlorate in their well last year. The discovery was part of an investigation of several plumes of perchlorate trailing from old contractor ranges on the southeastern portion of Camp Edwards. Perchlorate, a substance found in explosives and rocket fuel, can inhibit the uptake of iodide from the thyroid gland, which regulates the body. Over the years, the Air Force has connected local homes to town water where private wells were tainted from groundwater contamination coming from the Upper Cape military base. Last year, the Army paid for several tie-ins to the Bourne water district for several homes near the canal, where a perchlorate plume threatened a private well. But in the case of the Morettis, Army officials have said they are not certain the contamination at the private well is associated with the base plume. ...
