Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] EPA adds perchlorate to contaminant candidate list |
Yesterday's (February 24, 2005) Federal Register contains a notice that adds perchlorate, as well as fifty other substances, to EPA's contaminant candidate list under the Safe Drinking Water Act. This is a necessary step in the process required to establish a federal Maximum Contaminant Level (MCL), or drinking water standard, for perchlorate. There are many other steps required. Even if EPA makes perchlorate a priority among the nearly 100 other compounds on the list, it would take at least a year-and-a-half, under standard procedures, to publish a proposed MCL, and the process of taking and responding to comments would take an additional year.
