Ashland cleanup moves to Rattlesnake Creek Stacey Shepard Tonawanda News (NY) March 1, 2005 The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers expects remediation of a contaminated piece of land on River Road in the Town of Tonawanda to be completed this summer. Work on the final portion of the Ashland site, which was a dumping ground for radiological waste during the nation's atomic weapons program during the Cold War, will begin in March and is expected to last only a few months, said Joan Morrisey, community outreach specialist for the Corps. The former Ashland refinery is located east of the Grand Island bridge, near the Seaway municipal landfill. The Corps already has removed contamination from most of the site in a project that began in 1998. ...
