Ordnance project official responds to landowners By Gene Deason Brownwood Bulletin (TX) March 1, 2005 The manager of a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project designed to clear military ordnance left by Camp Bowie after it closed following World War II has written letters to property owners addressing concerns they voiced during a Feb. 3 meeting here. Among those concerns were that the Texas National Guard is planning a major expansion requiring acquisition of significant acreage in the former Camp Bowie area which has been privately held for over a half century. The letter written by Project Manager Dwayne Ford of the Corps' Fort Worth office reiterated comments he made in response to questions concerning the Formerly Used Defense Sites program. He wrote that the program he oversees "cannot obtain property even if a property owner wants to sell, lease or even give it to the government." He added that the FUDS mission is to clean up residual contamination from military activities on property once owned or leased by the Department of Defense. Letters previously sent to property owners had asked for access to the land to search for World War II era ordnance as well as environmental problems caused by the base's activity. ...
