Perchlorate level revision consideredBy Karen Gardner North Adams Transcript (MA) March 9, 2005 BOSTON -- Although the federal government issued its first safe drinking water standard for perchlorate in February, the state's division of the Environmental Protection Agency expect to come out with its own standard in about a month. In addition, the Massachusetts department will propose a clean-up standard for perchlorate in drinking water systems. The standard will specify to what level the perchlorate must be reduced, in order to be considered safe. Perchlorate, a chemical used in rocket fuel and explosives, was discovered last spring at Mount Greylock Regional High School in Williamstown. With a finding last October of 10 parts per billion, the school's well water has the third-highest perchlorate level in the state. ...
