Dirt-disposal plan divides officials 
Using former Nike site for school excavation seen as a way to cut cost

The Needham School Committee is expected to decide Tuesday night if a
piece of school-owned land should become home to a 12-foot high mound of dirt.

The proposal, which could open the way for a new school or athletic
fields, has divided town officials.

The idea arose as a way to trim the cost of the $51.3 million high
school renovation project.

As much as $200,000 could be saved if contractors are allowed to dump
60,000 cubic yards of excavated dirt onto the old Nike site, said Steven
Popper, head of the Permanent Public Building Committee. In the 1950s,
Army missiles were stored on the 19-acre property, which now has hiking
paths and a police firing range.

The building panel has proposed six scenarios for stockpiling the dirt,
with two receiving the most attention:
