Navy officials send registered letters bearing unwelcome news. Navy real estate contractors eye homes and businesses of willing sellers. It sounds like what Washington County residents and landowners have had to deal with since the Navy announced intentions to buy 33,000 acres of property to build an outlying landing field. But the setting this time is Virginia, specifically communities adjacent to Naval Air Station Oceana and associated facilities. Nearly two decades of failing to deal with sprawling development -- by both city fathers and the Navy -- has landed both in hot water. ...
