Door open to develop Atlas land Permits outline cleanup operation at part of site By Wally Kennedy Joplin Globe (MO) March 18, 2005 Nearly 1,200 acres at the former site of Atlas Powder Co. east of Joplin could soon become available for development. The land served as a buffer for the explosives manufacturing plant, which operated for the better part of 100 years. The plant produced dynamite for use in the Tri-State Mining District and other explosive materials, such as ammonium nitrate. The land was off limits to development until recently. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources and Expert Management Inc. have reached an agreement that separates areas of chemical contamination at the plant from the buffer. Three permits were issued March 3 that will let EMI clean up the contamination that has been isolated to 556.5 acres at the site. The remaining 1,186.5 acres are now free for development. ...
