County to test wells for cancer-causing chemicals By PAMELA WOOD Annapolis Capital (MD) March 18, 2005 County health officials are planning to test 19 wells at homes in Odenton for cancer-causing chemicals that may have leached into the groundwater from nearby Fort George G. Meade. Elevated levels of tetrachloroethene and carbon tetrachloride were found at three monitoring wells on the Army installation near Odenton. County health workers started setting appointments yesterday for well sampling that will begin Monday. Results could take a week. ... The county learned recently that Army tests done in June at three wells near an aquifer revealed excessive levels of tetrachloroethene, a dry-cleaning solution, and carbon tetrachloride, a pesticide. The chemical levels were as much as four times the federal government's contamination standards. The aquifer, one of three that lie beneath or near Fort Meade, provides a well-water source for the western Anne Arundel County communities of Piney Orchard and Odenton. ...
