Eco-headaches Pollution stalling economic development Fred Musante, Editor Stratford Star (CT) March 31, 2005 Town officials may soon have to make decisions involving Stratford's two toxic waste headaches - the Raymark waste that contaminates many properties in the South End of town and the solvents and metals that pollute the Army Engine Plant. The two environmental problems are the biggest factors stalling the growth of the town's Grand List through economic development. ... For the first time in the 10-year effort to redevelop the U.S. Army's former tank engine manufacturing plant, the developer and his negotiators say the Army has an incentive to make a deal. The Army is planning a new round of base closures in May. It is an embarrassment that the engine plant and other base closures announced in 1995 haven't been completed yet, said Aaron Hochman, principle owner of Team Stratford, the town's designated developer for the plant facility. Hochman wants the Army to transfer the property to the town and also to pay enough money to clean it up so it can be redeveloped. ...
