House authorizes $50 million for perchlorate cleanup in SoCal Associated Press San Jose Mercury News (CA) April 12, 2005 WASHINGTON - The House of Representatives on Tuesday approved spending $50 million to clean up groundwater tainted by perchlorate in the Santa Ana watershed. There have been 186 perchlorate detections in areas served by the watershed, which include portions of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, according to the office of Rep. Joe Baca, D-San Bernardino, who authored the legislation. "The economic costs of providing safe drinking water are becoming more and more of a burden on our communities," Baca said in a statement. "By most accounts, perchlorate in water comes from a federal source. We must reverse the trend where innocent hardworking families pay for a federally-created problem that no one will take responsibility for." Baca's bill, which passed on voice vote, still requires Senate approval before it could become law. It also passed the House last year but did not make it through the Senate before the end of the last congressional session. ...
