SANTA CLARITA -- Newhall Land has requested the City Council postpone
what may be the final review of its 1,100-home Riverpark project after
an area well tested positive for perchlorate contamination, officials
said Tuesday.

The test well monitored by Valencia Water Company is located west of the
Bouquet Canyon Road bridge over the Santa Clara River, about 500 feet
from a gasoline station at the intersection with Soledad Canyon Road,
said Glenn Adamick, vice president for planning at The Newhall Land and
Farming Company.

The developer asked the City Council to continue the hearing until May
24 to allow the water agency to confirm the result.

"This is new information," said Adamick, who became aware of the
positive test results Tuesday. "It is in everybody's best interest to
wait for the confirmation process to be done, and be disclosed as part
of the Riverpark process.

A well near the planned 1,089-unit Riverpark project has tested positive
for contaminants, officials said Tuesday, prompting the developer to
yank it from the Santa Clarita City Council?s agenda hours before it was
due for final approval.

Water from the well, located in the river near Bouquet Canyon Road and
Newhall Ranch Road, was tainted with perchlorate, a component of rocket
fuel that had previously forced the closure of five other wells in the
area. It has been linked with thyroid problems in humans.

Evidence of the compound was confirmed on the eve of anticipated City
Council certification of the Riverpark environmental impact report.

?Perchlorate was never detected in that well before,? said Marlee
Lauffer, spokeswoman for The Newhall Land and Farming Co.
