Fire kills foothills activist

Jana M. Walsh, 48, organizer of a group opposed to the proposed Yuba
Highlands development, died Monday in a garage fire at her home on
Intanko Lane at Camp Far West, a Yuba County Sheriff's Department
official said.

In early 2003, Walsh formed Yuba Citizens Against Poor Planning to
oppose Yuba Highlands near Beale Air Force Base. The new group was for
people who wished to oppose the project for other than environmental
issues, she said.

Walsh said Yuba Highlands would encroach on Beale, endangering its
existence, and that traffic from the development would overload county roads.
