Edwards cleans up its act Base nearly spick-and-span after 15 years on EPA list By Jim Skeen Los Angeles Daily News Staff Writer May 31, 2005 EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE -- Nearly 15 years after being named to the U.S. EPA's Superfund list, Edwards Air Force Base has trimmed its potentially contaminated sites from 471 to 60. Since being named in August 1990 as having among the worst contamination in the United States, the base has spent about $145 million on cleanups that officials said have removed well over 1.6 million pounds of contaminants, much of it aircraft fuel and cleaning solvents. "It's important to know that no one has ever been harmed," said Bob Wood, chief of the base's environmental management division. "Nothing got into the water. Nothing seeped into a building." ...
