4 families told not to use wells By FRED CONTRADA Springfield Republican (MA) May 28, 2005 CHESTERFIELD - The state Department of Environmental Protection told four families in town to stop using their well water after finding it contains higher than standard levels of perchlorate. Elizabeth M. Stinehart, the deputy regional director of the Department of Environmental Protection, said that her department recently tested eight wells within 500 feet of the former Davenport School on Route 143 after the school's water supply tested positive for perchlorate. In six of those wells, including the one serving the school, the water contained more than one part per billion of perchlorate. One part per billion is the current standard that the department uses to determine if the water is safe for children, seniors, and pregnant women, Stinehart said. ...
