Child cancer rate reviewed By ROBIN LORD Cape Cod Times July 4, 2005 It will be at least six more months before the state health department reports on its investigation into whether there are higher than average childhood cancer rates in Sandwich. Assistant DPH commissioner Suzanne Condon said it will take months to sort through the cancer cases and compare them with rates in the rest of Cape Cod and the state. "We will basically determine where the children (with cancer) live in relation to each other and areas of environmental concern, and we will also be looking at the time of diagnosis and any pattern that might suggest exposure during a certain time that might be important," she said. Condon declined to be specific about what environmental concerns she was talking about. The Massachusetts Military Reservation, which is sprawled across four towns , including Sandwich, is a federal Superfund site, due to groundwater contamination from military-related pollutants. Upper Cape residents have also fretted for years about the presence of the Mirant Canal power plant, and the military's PAVE PAWS radar station, which detects any infringement into U.S. air space. The Mirant plant is in Sandwich. PAVE PAWS is in Sagamore, near the Sandwich line. ...
