U.S., company wrangle over contamination site 
Tests left waste seeping into Goodyear water

More legal tangles related to groundwater contamination are emerging in Goodyear.
Negotiations continue in a pair of U.S. District Court lawsuits in which
both parties - the federal government and Crane Co. - are suing each
other. Each party blames the other and believes the other should assume
responsibility for cleaning up toxic chemicals.

Parties close to the lawsuits suggest that a settlement could occur in
the next few months. The government filed its suit a year ago, and
Crane, also known as Unidynamics, filed its suit in November 2003.

Crane made and tested explosives for the Defense Department from 1963 to
1993 in Goodyear and left hazardous waste that has seeped into the
area's groundwater. The former Crane/Unidynamics site is part of the
federal government's Superfund program.
