Tests show low perchlorate contamination By HAL McCUNE East Oregonian July 6, 2005 HERMISTON ? Water and soil samples taken last November and December validated two earlier tests showing low concentrations of perchlorate contamination in north Morrow and Umatilla counties. Perchlorate is a naturally occurring and manufactured salt that dissolves easily in water. If large amounts are ingested, it can "disrupt iodine uptake in the thyroid gland and interfere with thyroid hormone production," according to the state Department of Environmental Quality. Pregnant women, children and infants are most at risk. The latest sampling results were released Tuesday. DEQ secured the samples and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency tested them. The goal of the ongoing testing is to determine if there's a significant threat to public health and the environment and to determine if further action is needed by the EPA or DEQ. ...
