Military, conservationists unite to deflect urban encroachment By Mike Lee SAN DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE July 26, 2005 With urban sprawl creeping toward Camp Pendleton's fences, the Marines and conservation groups have locked arms to keep new neighbors from edging closer and to preserve dwindling parcels of undeveloped property. Together, the unlikely allies have charted 54,000 acres near the base and are planning to buy land to preserve those open spaces. As soon as this week, the Trust for Public Land expects to finalize a deal that would give it the right to buy 1,200 acres from a private landowner on the northeast shoulder of the base. The group also is negotiating a transfer of development rights for that property to the Marine Corps. ...
