Well testing continues By Scott De Laruelle Baraboo News Republic (WI) August 5, 2005 BARABOO - The Army will increase tests of drinking wells around the Badger Army Ammunition Plant despite no new contamination in nearby private wells, said installation director Joan Kenney at a meeting last week. Doug Rubingh of Army environmental contractor Shaw E & I said the Army will install new monitoring wells in Sumpter township later this year. DNR hydrogeologist Steve Ales said past positive tests for contaminants in nearby private wells and concerns of local residents spurred the DNR to ask for the new wells. Workers recently installed three groups of monitoring wells at Water's Edge subdivision, and Kenney said the Army is proposing three new groups in the Windings area. She said there are some monitoring wells near the Windings, but these would be the first to go within the subdivision. Some people at the meeting who live near the plant said they want the Army to continue supplying bottled water to residents. Kenney said if their wells do not have high enough contamination levels, the Army is not obliged to provide water. ...
