Badger Plant gets new life in highway Recycled material becomes road base By Anita Weier The Capital Times (WI) August 6, 2005 Recycling will become a high art in the reconstruction of Wisconsin 78 from Prairie du Sac through Merrimac. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation plans to use ground-up concrete from buildings at the Badger Army Ammunition Plant near Baraboo for a road base when the highway is improved in 2007 to make it less accident-prone. The 7,350-acre plant, developed in 1942 to make munitions for World War II and later wars, was placed in standby mode in 1975 and declared excess property in late 1997. An extensive re-use planning process followed before it was decided that the site would be divided between the state Department of Natural Resources, the Ho-Chunk Nation and the Dairy Forage Research Center. ...
