DEP Cites Need To Continue Cleanup Work At Sub Base By JUDY BENSON New London Day (CT) August 25, 2005 Groton - At the state Department of Environmental Protection, hearing ?the best possible news? about the Naval Submarine Base won't end the agency's interest in the 687-acre property. ?The best possible news today is that the sub base will remain open,? said Dennis Schain, spokesman for the DEP. ?But the BRAC process did bring to light several environmental issues at the base, and we do need to move forward to address them ... ? The state will press for a speedier timeline for remaining cleanup of contaminated soils and groundwater and other pollutants at the base than the Navy has been following, Schain added. The Navy plans to complete the cleanup of Superfund sites on the base over the next six years. ...
