Recruit depot to clean contamination By GEOFF ZIEZULEWICZ The Beaufort Gazette (SC) September 3, 2005 While Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island is well known as the place where Marines are made, a less desirable legacy has also arisen on its sprawling acreage. Garbage piles can be found on nearby Jericho Island. Lead, arsenic and other chemicals accumulated throughout the years have contaminated the soil at some sites. There are also concerns involving possible contamination near water sources. Most contamination -- from chemical spills, leaks and other practices -- occurred decades ago, when environmental considerations weren't as prominent and legislation banning such practices was rare, depot scientist Tim Harrington said. Some of the contaminated property wasn't owned by the Navy when the pollution happened. But these remnants from the past have resulted in site studies at more than 40 sites on Parris Island and the surrounding Navy-owned property. ...
