Explosives risk near West Point By Greg Bruno Middletown Times Herald-Record (NY) October 8, 2005 West Point ? A Defense Department investigation has identified areas near the U.S. Military Academy where unexploded ordnance could pose a risk to public safety. TechLaw Inc., a Virginia-based environmental firm, conducted the review by examining Academy records to estimate the location of potential impact zones from closed test ranges. The areas identified include private property along the east side of the Hudson River north of Garrison, a patch of land between Cold Spring and the Breakneck Ridge Highway Tunnel, and land north of West Point inside the Palisades Interstate Park. Military-owned lands near the Lee Housing area and Storm King State Park were also determined to be potential problem areas. In a statement, West Point Garrison Commander Col. Brian Crawford said additional studies are planned to further assess the risk. He urged people to exercise caution if they uncover unexploded devices. ...
