Air Force agrees to buy Barrow family's property $462,500: Ted Stevens aids deal; PCBs contaminate 160-acre parcel. By LIZ RUSKIN Anchorage Daily News (AK) October 19, 2005 WASHINGTON -- The Air Force has agreed to buy a tract of North Slope land from a prominent Barrow family for $462,500 -- far less than the $2.5 million Sen. Ted Stevens tried to get for the family in a defense appropriations bill last year. The land, about 160 acres at Oliktok Point on the Beaufort Sea, belongs to Jacob Adams, president of the powerful Arctic Slope Regional Corp., and his siblings, Marie Carroll and Johnny Adams. They inherited it from their father. A portion of it contains an Air Force dump that is contaminated with PCBs. Carroll said last year that her family has long ties to that land. Her great-great-grandmother and other relatives are buried there, near where the Air Force later put a runway to serve a Distant Early Warning radar site. ...
