Ordnance stalls Camp Bonneville's transfer to Clark County Environment Wrangling over a cleanup continues and leaves in doubt a May turnover ALLAN BRETTMAN The Oregonian November 14, 2005 VANCOUVER -- Mortar shells used to fly just five miles from today's Vancouver city limits. The howitzers have been silent for years at Camp Bonneville, a military reservation used as a firing range from 1910 to 1995. Artillery and mortar ammunition, air-launched rockets, shoulder-fired rockets, guided missiles, bombs, land mines, practice grenades, fuses and small-arms ammunition were stored or used at the site, more than half of which is forested. Now, if the U.S. Army and Clark County parks planners have their way, the property will be turned over to the county in May. And the county one day would transform part of the land into a park with yurts, RV camping and an equestrian center. A determined group of citizen activists, however, is working to make sure that does not happen until they have more assurance that the 3,840-acre reservation does not have unexploded ordnance and does not pose a long-term environmental threat. ...
