Hondo airport cleanup remains in holding pattern Zeke MacCormack San Antonio Express-News (TX) December 21, 2005 HONDO ? A longstanding pollution problem at this city's airport doesn't appear as bad as suspected, officials say, but progress on its costly cleanup remains slow amid haggling over who's responsible. A new Environmental Protection Agency report said recent tests revealed elevated levels of chromium and lead in soil at the airstrip off U.S. 90 and fuel components in groundwater. Authorities said the contamination poses little public health risk. The pollution may date to the site's use as a military air base beginning in 1942. Some of the pollution in six areas is blamed on military contractors working in buildings leased from the city, which was deeded the airport by the federal government in 1948. ...
