Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Camp Lejeune encroaches on neighbors |
Most of the discussion of encroachment presumes that outside development
or environmental requirements are encroaching on military operations,
but that's not always the case. Near Camp Lejeune's new Greater Sandy
Run Training Area, established residents find the noise and shaking from
near-continuous artillery bombardment intolerable. It appears that
because of the sparse population density, opposition is limited. But the
neighbors report that the Marines have done nothing to address their
concerns. After the Marines acquired the range in 1992, they appear to have done a good job of addressing environmental (wetlands and habitat) and historical impacts, but they did not mitigate the impact of training on nearby people.
