Military to spend millions more on Zonolite homes CBC Manitoba (Canadian Broadcasting) January 18, 2006 The [Canadian] Department of National Defence is once again spending millions of dollars to protect its tenants from asbestos contamination caused by Zonolite insulation in military homes. Last year, DND spent about $2.5-million testing and removing Zonolite insulation from military homes. Now, as much as $2.8-million will be spent sealing vents, light fixtures and bathroom fans in military houses that still have Zonolite. Zonolite, a popular type of insulation used in thousands of Canadian homes, was made from the mineral vermiculite, which came from a W.R. Grace mine in Montana that was naturally contaminated with an extremely carcinogenic form of asbestos. ...
