[The perchlorate plume in Rialto appears to originate on property that
was an Army Ammunition Support Point during World War II. The facility
closed immediately after the war. Since perchlorate was not widely used
at that time, the Army's argument that it did not cause the release is
plausible. However, a number of private firms moved onto the property to
take advantage of the munitions storage "igloos." Emhart's predecessor,
West Coast Loading, appears to be one of them. - LS] Water board chief opposed to delaying a July hearing PERCHLORATE: A firm that once operated a Rialto facility is accused of polluting area wells.
LOMA LINDA - The region's chief water-quality regulator signaled Wednesday that she would refuse to delay a July hearing for a company accused of being a key contributor to perchlorate contamination that has closed 20 drinking-water wells in the San Bernardino Valley. Carole Beswick, chairwoman of the Santa Ana Regional Water Quality Control Board, said she would decide Monday after Emhart Industries Inc. has a chance to refine its plan to determine the company's role in the pollution. "It's sounding like it has no traction," Beswick said of a delay, after hearing board members and the public argue against it. ...
