Pentagon warns Beach's plan won't meet criteriaBy DALE EISMAN The Virginian-Pilot February 1, 2006 WASHINGTON — The Pentagon has warned state and Virginia Beach officials that their efforts to limit commercial and residential development near Oceana Naval Air Station “may not fully address” the demands of a federal base-closing commission. A letter by Deputy Defense Secretary Gordon R. England voices “concerns” about the city’s refusal to condemn homes and businesses in high-risk accident-potential zones near the base. It does not indicate whether defense officials will answer that stand by moving Oceana’s fighter aircraft. The Virginian-Pilot obtained a copy of the Jan. 26 letter, which was addressed to Virginia Sen. John W. Warner, on Tuesday. Warner, the state’s senior representative in Washington, has joined other area officials in pressing the Department of Defense to preserve Oceana as the Navy’s East Coast master jet base. ...
