Allies Squabble Over US Base Contamination By Jung Sung-ki Korea Times February 3, 2006 Seoul and Washington are locked in tough negotiations over who should deal with contamination on U.S. bases that are to be returned to South Korean ownership, a government source said. The conflict has delayed the U.S. base relocation plan, a major agreement struck between the two allies in 2004 as part of Washington?s realignment of all its overseas forces. Under the relocation pact, the United States is required to hand back in stages 34 military bases spread around the country by 2011, including 11 last year. In their stead, it will build two consolidated and modernized bases in Pyongtaek and Osan, 70 kilometers south of Seoul, by 2008. ...
