Panel eyeing base water gets plea to expand studyCHRIS MAZZOLINI JACKSONVILLE DAILY NEWS (NC) February 2,2006 ATLANTA — A federal agency investigating past water contamination aboard Camp Lejeune agreed Wednesday during a meeting with a community panel to start hashing out the details for a study that could determine whether those exposed to bad water may have a higher death rate than the average population. The seven-member community assistance panel - consisting of people from the affected community - met for the first time in Atlanta to provide recommendations for the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry as to how it proceeds concerning Camp Lejeune. It is the latest in a number of steps investigating the contamination of Camp Lejeune’s water system between 1968 and 1985 by the chemicals trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE). The chemicals leaked into the water supply from a nearby dry-cleaning business and areas aboard the base. ...
