Sumter Residents Seek Info on Contaminated WaterAshley Yarchin WLTX TV-News 19 (Columbia, SC) February 7, 2006 (Sumter) - Last week, we told you about groundwater contamination near Shaw Air Force Base. A chemical de-greaser known as TCE was used on planes during World War II, and it was used in dry cleaning. It was on the base from the 40's through the 70's, but it was banned after that. During a random water survey in 1989, DHEC discovered the chemical in groundwater. After years of study and research, the Air Force has worked to get rid of the contamination. Since 1997, a base spokesman said they've removed about 55% of the contamination. So that means another 45% remains. The big question now: Did the contaminated water make residents sick? That's the question at least one man wants answers to. That's why he went to Monday night's public meeting held by Shaw officials. ...
