Federal Officials Propose Drilling South of PanhandleCory Reiss Lakeland Ledger (FL) February 9, 2006 THE NEWS The federal agency that manages offshore drilling recommended Wednesday that Interior Secretary Gale Norton open 2 million acres in the Gulf of Mexico south of the Florida Panhandle for oil and gas production. The department does not need permission from Congress or the president to do that because drilling bans in effect since the 1980s cover most U.S. waters but not these. Leasing in the 2-million acre Gulf patch would begin as soon as the fall of next year if Norton approves the five-year drilling plan, which will set offshore drilling policy from mid-2007 to mid-2012. ... Federal officials said the draft plan would not interfere with military training zones in the eastern Gulf that have been a concern to Florida lawmakers on all sides of the issue. ...
